A significant conceptual advance has been achieved within the No Time Universe (NTU) framework. The latest development proposes that the electromagnetic field is not a fundamental field superimposed on spacetime, but rather the direct manifestation of a deeper geometric structure already present within the timeless NTU substrate.

This result addresses two longstanding questions simultaneously:

• Why does an invariant propagation speed exist in Nature?
• Why does the photon possess zero rest mass?

From critical geometry to the emergence of light

The NTU is built from pre-links and fractal surfaces evolving through the propagation of a causal front. Two complementary geometric processes govern the dynamics:$$F_Q = N_Q^{1/2}\Sigma_Q$$

for unresolved quantum configurations, and$$F_G = N_G^{1/2}\Sigma_G$$

for realized and rigidified structures.

The new result identifies a critical geometric hypersurface defined by$$F_Q = F_G.$$

This hypersurface represents the unique equilibrium between openness and closure, possibility and realization. It is neither purely quantum nor purely gravitational. Why the photon has zero mass

The same mechanism provides a natural explanation for the masslessness of the photon. Massive particles correspond to trajectories that require additional closure bursts and therefore additional rigidification of the NTU structure.

In the NTU interpretation, the photon is therefore not a special particle moving through spacetime. It is the natural excitation of the critical geometry itself. Since it experiences no net rigidification, it acquires no rest mass.
